Tygart Lake State Park - Grafton, WV
Tygart Lake State Park: Grafton, WV 7 September 2020
LABOR DAY
The night before my friend and I agreed to wake up early to hit the road for a little lake day to celebrate Labor Day. Ideal, right! Yet, as the morning came we didn't end up leaving till 12pm...I will admit it was my fault because I forgot to pack a bathing suit and had to make a pit stop in the morning. Anyways, the drive from Morgantown to Grafton, West Virginia was gorgeous. Nothing like driving on whiny roads canopied by trees. However, the roads were 55mph, but honestly should be a lot slower than that, but it did make for some great time.
Once getting to the state park, it was a bit confusing to find the correct spot to park and get to the beach. Yet, after driving around aimlessly for a good half hour we finally found the right place to park. From the car we hiked to a secluded area in a smaller section of the lake while being right by a little dock. As soon as I saw the water my jaw dropped in awe of the color of the water. I'm personally used to Lake Erie water, which is green and mucky, so to see bright blue waters was amazing. Being by the dock was actually super nice, we then spent the majority of the day launching ourselves off and under the dock while watching the boats and seadoos race by. It seemed as if everyone had the same idea to soak up the last few moments of summers warmth as well.
Eventually, we ditched the dock and decided to flat on logs. Yes...logs, from the forest that were already down. And as you may know wood can float, therefore soon becoming our personal "floaty"/boat. This was truly an amazing idea from 3 creative minds to then seat all of us on one log and float on the side of the lake watching the sunset. The feeling of this experience was no other than emaculate. And I highly recommend trying it out. *NOTE: of course we did take the logs back out of the lake once done*
As the day started to turn into night we had decided to had back home. But a day like this couldn't have been this perfect without something going wrong. This so happened to be a car accident ahead of us blocking traffic for miles and the only other way around it was to go completely around the mountain. Though this situation was super inconvenient, I will say it was nice to see a whole different side of the town and state park then originally seen.
Pros:
- Docks: Their is a little dock made for smaller boats, which is available for the campers that stay at the park. However I believe you need to get a permit in order to dock.
- Logs: All I'm going to say about this is LOGS + WATER = AMAZING LAKE DAY
- Campsites are very cheap and secluded which is always ideal
- Signs: Hopefully they have added more signs but when I went there were hardly any signs directing you where to go and how to find places in the park
